Heart failure might sound like a frightening thing as in its literal sense it means the heart has completely stopped working. But the term heart failure refers to the condition in which the tissues of the body temporarily do not receive blood and oxygen in their required amounts. There are two types of heart failure - 1.Systolic heart failure - This condition occurs when the pumping motion of the heart is reduced or is not at par with past performance. A common clinical measurement used is the ejection fraction (EF). The ejection fraction is the amount of blood ejected by the left ventricle divided by the volume of blood remaining in the left ventricle during diastole. Which is similar to a relaxed phase of the heart after filling of the blood. In normal condition, the ejection fraction should be greater than 55%. Systolic heart failure is said to occur when the ejection fraction has significantly decreased the normal threshold value of 55%.
Symptoms of Heart Failure Heart problems are covert in nature and not that easy to detect in the early stages. Some of the early signs of heart failure are - ?Shortness of breath, cough or failure to get deep breaths even on demand is a sign, especially if you have difficulty breathing while lying down. If your breathing problems like asthma or emphysema worsens then you might be having an attack. Exercise intolerance - If everyday tasks seem like a burden and even mild exertion tires one, it might be a sign of an underlying heart problem. A failing heart cannot keep up with the oxygen demands of the body and fails to pump enough blood to provide a sufficient amount to the body. Fluid Retention - Inflammation in the legs, feet or ankles are also a common sign in the case of cardiovascular problems. Also known as oedema this condition can worsen by physical exertion such a prolonged sitting. It is much more pronounced in the ankles and lower legs especially in front of the tibia. Treatments The treatment of heart failure varies case by case but in most instances can be treated effectively. If the underlying cause of heart failure is not correctable by surgery then medical treatment is composed of lifestyle changes and a few medications.
