What is Intelligent transport System and how is it different from present system? |

ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management System) combines different types of communication technology to make a unique information sharing system helpful in traffic management. In future, all the transportation processes will be networked with a dedicated system that will help improve transportation in several ways. Improving road safety High speed, unfriendly weather conditions and traffic congestion leads to road accidents and loss of life and property. An intelligent system will help motorists drive safely. The system will collect real-time data on weather like wind speed, cloudy sky and rain. The data will then be transmitted to regional transport monitoring stations from where it will be communicated to motorists to alert them about the dangerous ahead. Reducing infrastructure damage Heavy vehicles like trucks and tractor-trailers can damage roads, if they are overloaded. Older forms of weight control in heavy vehicles can put limited help in controlling movement of overloaded vehicles. But Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) can work as weight-in-motion systems where gross weight of a vehicle according to its type, size and engine power of the vehicle will be measured when the vehicle is in motion. In this way, overloaded vehicle will be identified and appropriate action taken before they slow down traffic movement and damage the road network. Traffic control The new system would be adaptive that is it will control traffic according to traffic patterns. Smart intersections will be created and the vehicular movement will be controlled according to the flow. The present fixed lights will respond to the traffic movement to improve free movement by reducing weighting time. Parking management Illegal parking adds to traffic woes and overstaying drivers find little space to park their vehicles resulting in slow down of vehicles. The issue of illegally parked vehicles is increasing day-by-day. Presently, the authorities have to rely on manual traffic checking for illegally parked vehicles. But after ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management System), the automatic system will notice the vehicles that are illegally parked and alert the authorities. Gathering traffic data The existing traffic sensor will get more teeth with the new system in place. The data will be updated from time-to-time and it will be more accurate than the information collected by the present and outdated traffic sensors. Conclusion Introduction of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) will bolster the present traffic management process. It will improve management to ensure road safety. The objective of the new system is to provide space to every vehicle.
