Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (The Iron Lady) (born November 19, 1917 – 31 October 1984) was the Prime Minister of the India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a 4th term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was elected Congress President in 1959. Smt. Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Born in a illustrious family, she was possibly destined for a famous political career. Smt Indira gandhi went to the University of Oxford in Britain, where she studied history, political science and economics. As the Prime Minister of India, Gandhi was famous for her political ruthlessness and extraordinary centralization of power.Indira Gandhi was assassinated by 2 of her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
