Volunteer Work in India |

Being a developing country, India has always had and still has a lot of scope for volunteer work; the more the number of hands, the better. So, as the number of NGOs is increasing, there has also been a rise in the level of volunteer work in the country. It should not be a surprise that most people think of volunteering as just something nice that people can do. Sure, it may make them feel great about helping, but what impact does it really have?
Volunteers have a humungous impact on the health and well-being of entire communities. All you need to do is to think of ways in which volunteers make a difference in everyday life. You may not notice them immediately, but they are present everywhere bringing change:
Another way to measure the impact of volunteers is to take a look at statistics like hours served and the economic value of volunteer time. Now, to think about it, most of our lives seem to be (to put it mildly), stressful, whether we are actually busy or not. The thing is, at some point in life we get so caught up with what’s going on with us that the rest of the world takes a backseat. So, the question remains: why bother volunteering? When it comes to service work, it’s important to realize that, similar to an actual career, not all volunteer positions fit everyone. It is one thing to log for hours organizing files or fundraising, but the actual goal should be maximizing your utility. To get real joy out of volunteering, so that even you can give your best, don’t just settle for an organization just to rack up the hours. There’s a lot more to volunteering than that! It’s important to choose an organization that clicks with you. As much as we would like to avoid it, we do live in a pretty competitive world. India has also become a part of today’s rat-race where everyone wants to be at the top. Volunteering, while it won’t raise your GPA or ensure a promotion, will give you a plethora of other things, like experiences, connections, and most importantly, a voice. As mentioned at the beginning, India has enormous potential for growth as most of its population falls in the younger age bracket; that is the working population that we know of that has to potential to bring laurels for the country. So volunteering opportunities don’t only exist for Indian nationals but also for foreigners, who can volunteer for different kinds of work. One such organization which provides for such options is Lakshyam, which is an NGO spread over 11 states across India that is essentially working for the welfare of under-privileged families, education of children from such families and women empowerment. People from different states and countries can volunteer in the different branches of the country. The number of ways that it offers for you to help is also quite significant. One can donate or contribute to Lakshyam in cash or kind. One can also teach children Hindi, English, Computer as well as art and craft or dramatics to the children that it caters to. Whether you are an Indian national or a foreigner, the all-consuming diversity of the country (that can be even felt from village to village, state to state) ensures a life-enriching consummation with the local cultures. So, volunteer work in India can rake up a lot of opportunities for one seeking to gain new experiences, create new connections, give back to society, help others or even build career options.
